Junior Bahamian athletes shine on second day

The Bahamian contingent at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Canada moved into its second day of competition Wednesday, with its most prolific quartermiler continuing to lead the way.

Shaunae Miller advanced to the final of the women's 400m after finishing second in semifinal two and earning an automatic bid. She finished in 53.21s, second behind Margaret Etim of Nigeria who won in 52.63s.

Fellow-Nigerian Bukola Abogunloko qualified with the second fastest time after winning semifinal one in 52.86s.

Rashan Brown just missed out on a berth to the final after she finished fifth in semifinal three in 54.14s.

Chantel Malone of the British Virgin Islands took the event in 53.37s.

Raymond Higgs recorded the fifth best jump in the men's long jump, 7.50m, in Group A to qualify for last night's final.

V'Alonee Robinson's bid in the women's 100m ended in the semifinals where she finished seventh in 12.14s. The Carifta standout advanced out of the preliminaries when she finished fifth in heat four with a time of 11.95s.

Marvar Etienne finished fourth in heat five, however, her time of 12.12s was not fast enough to qualify for the semifinals.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Ivanique Kemp turned in a personal best in the preliminary round with a time of 13.58s, good enough for third place in her heat.

Kemp was unable to advance to the final last night, when she finished fifth in heat two in a time of 13.77s.

She missed a trip to the final by 0.1s as Jessica Alcan of France was the final qualifier to advance with a time of 13.76s.

Warren Fraser advanced to the second round of the men's century when he took heat four in 10.46s, a new personal best. He advanced to the semifinal where he ran in heat three and finished third in 10.72s.

Geno Jones finished third in heat three in 10.66s, but failed to advance to the next round.

Aaron Brown of Canada took first place in 10.62s, just ahead of defending champion Dexter Lee of Jamaica who finished in 10.66s.

Fraser missed a berth in the final by the slimmest of margins, just 0.1.

Patrick Faklye of Australia was the eighth qualifier to the final in a time of 10.71s which he posted in a fourth place run in heat one.

Nejmi Burnside posted a time of 54.17s in the men's 400m hurdles, good enough for seventh place but failed to advance.

In Tuesday's evening session, Stephen Newbold struggled in the preliminaries of the men's 400m and finished seventh in 50.62s.

More Bahamian athletes are expected to take to the track today in the women's 200m preliminaries first on the schedule in the morning session at 8:55 am local time.

Tynia Gaiter is listed to run in heat one, while Anthonique Strachan will run in heat three.

In the men's 200m, scheduled for 10:45am, Laron Hield is scheduled to run in heat five, while Trevorano Mackey will contest heat six.
