Fresh water turtles thriving in Cat Island

Take a look at this crystal-clear video of fresh water turtles in the northern part of Cat Island.

The video was shot by biologist Grant Johnson, who was on vacation when he shot the video.

Speaking to BahamasLocal.com, Johnson said that not much is known about freshwater turtles in The Bahamas. Suggestions are that the turtles in Cat Island are from the same species as the ones in Bimini, where Johnson has spent ten years tagging sharks, stingrays and Smalltooth Sawfish.

See more about Johnson’s work here. He was happy to answer BahamasLocal.com’s questions and said he wouldn’t mind answering more if you email him at grant@biminisands.com.

Johnson told Bahamas Local that many researchers believe that the species in Bimini is endemic (native to) The Bahamas. He siad there is some speculation that the Lucayans spread the turtle population around The Bahamas, using them for food.

Johnson said the two ponds he visited in northern Cat Island were “absolutely stocked” with the turtles.
