Road improvement projects are a priority

Nassau, Bahamas -- Proper traffic management of the road improvement projects presently underway in New Providence is a priority for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

“We are conscientious of the fact that traffic needs to flow and that persons need to get to places where work is being done, so traffic management is a major component of this exercise,” said the Hon Neko C Grant. “We wish to assure the public that we do not seek to inconvenience them and we seek to keep inconvenience to a minimum.”

Following an electronic presentation on April 9 outlining the progress of the New Providence Road Improvement Project (NPRIP), Mr Grant toured sites including Saunders Beach at West Bay Street, Bethel Avenue, Market Street and Baillou Hill Road corridors and the intersection at East Street and Bamboo Boulevard. Also on the tour were representatives of the Ministry of Works, the Inter-American Development Bank and Jose Cartellone Constructiones Civiles, the contractors.

The NPRIP is a major component of the New Providence Transport Program and is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Government of The Bahamas. The Project Execution Unit of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport manages the project.

Providing an overview of the projects, Mr Grant said the roundabout at Saunders Beach is progressing quite well and all indications are that it is going to improve the traffic flow in that area considerably.

“Within the next week to 10 days we should begin planting the grape trees that will replace the trees that have been taken out,” he said. The grape trees should be between 15 feet to 20 feet.

Work on the corridor between Thompson Boulevard and Saunders Beach is progressing quite well and could be finished ahead of the scheduled date of August, Mr Grant said.

“We also looked at Market Street and contrary to reports of some radio announcers that signs were in the wrong direction, having inspected them personally today, we know that is not the case. All signs are in place at all the junctions. We also seek to improve the conditions by putting down road markings,” Mr Grant added.

He said the 14 side streets that connect Baillou Hill and Market Street are adequate for those persons who need to visit properties, houses or businesses.
