The country's first female member of parliament, first attorney general and the first woman to act as prime minister (during the absence from the country of both the prime minister and his deputy), Janet Bostwick will be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award during the fourth Bahamian Icon Awards.

Bostwick, who also served as minister of housing and labour, and minister of justice and immigration, will receive one of a number of awards to be meted out on Saturday night. Out of a 75-person nomination field, 15 people will be named icons by the end of the weekend.

Bostwick is also considered by many to be a national "matriarch of women's rights", having for decades fought the struggle to address inequalities faced by women in the country.

As a member of Parliament, she fought for and achieved a number of milestones in support of women's rights in The Bahamas -- the Affiliation Proceeding Act, the Inheritance Act, the Matrimonial Causes Act and the Status of Children Act, as well amendments to labor and National Insurance legislation.

The award show will be held on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort.

Icon Awards founder and executive producer Addis Huyler said that the award recognizes Bahamian citizens who have exemplified the best intentions of the Bahamian spirit -- excellence and achievement.

"Greatness never happens by accident or coincidence, and that greatness comes only with the conscious effort to work harder, be stronger, be smarter and more dedicated in an effort to manifest the highest and truest expression of self. And that it is a chosen life trajectory that is only undertaken when coupled with immense courage and a resolute ambition to succeed.

The goal of the awards is to provide an achievable goal that inspires and encourages consistent efforts to achieve excellence and the fostering of goodwill.

Nominees must be a Bahamian citizen, registered company or recognized organization. And will be considered based on specific contributions made to the betterment of the Bahamian society at large, and/or outstanding achievement in the two calendar years prior to the nomination deadline.
