The Bahamas Olympic Committee (BOC) has congratulated the Government of The Bahamas on its expansion of high school sports, culminating in national high school championships in a number of disciplines.

"Sports is an element that is critical in helping people to socialize and can be used positively to teach limits and the powerful concept that work and achievement are two things that always go together," said BOC President Wellington Miller.

"It is a proud moment for the Olympic Movement in The Bahamas to see the explosive growth of sports in our country; in the high schools and at various sporting facilities throughout. I want, therefore, to congratulate the government sports program through various school championships."

There has been the continuation of the high school track and field championships and basketball championships, the soccer championships have been introduced, and the baseball championships are coming. The high school softball championships are also on the horizon, all of which will bring more avenues for achievement.

"These are all good, sound programs to groom young people to become stronger citizens and take pride in the country. A young person can now take part in organized sports activities from the primary level straight through to the high school level," said Miller.

"We hope that this continues to lay the foundation for lifelong involvement in sports, which is in line with the Olympic ideals of excellence, friendship and respect, which aim to make sports part of the fundamental philosophy and principle of life.

"We look forward through this program to young people becoming more disciplined additions to society in the coming years, and I emphasize our congratulations to the government on the wisdom of promoting these sporting high school championships. It is a positive way to go with young minds, promoting growth-oriented competition."

The latest discipline to experience a national high school championship was soccer. The national high school soccer championships wrapped up at the end of last month at the Roscow A.L. Davis Soccer Field.
