Cell phone overkill

I was having a chat with a good friend of mine who had recently been in hospital but was now well on the way to recovery. I apologized for not being able to visit her. She replied that each evening at visiting time, her family, husband and children, and several friends plus colleagues from work used to visit with her. However, she remarked with a whimsical smile on her face, they might as well have stayed at home as they were all busy on their cell phones.

I thought to myself, this thing has really gotten completely out of hand as so many people don't seem to be able to exist unless they're constantly on their ever-present cell phone either speaking to someone, usually about nothing really important, certainly nothing urgent, texting or on WhatsApp, which just about all the young kids I know are using throughout the day and night.

Yes indeed, this really is a clear-cut case of cell phone mania or as I have put it in today's title, surely it is cell phone overkill. Yes it is, and according to many experts whom I have listened to on television, it's really not good for people, and especially young people and teenagers from a mental health point of view. Of course, as the parents, guardian and teachers appear to be permanently attached to their cell phones, how can they instruct their children not to do likewise?

The use of modern technology is indeed most beneficial in many ways, however, as I have stated over and over again in these articles, we need to have balance in our lives at all times. So by all means use your cell phone in emergencies, but not on a continual basis, and please make sure that your children are not permanently on their cell phones as this is not good for their social development.
