A number of young boxers are expected to mix it up at the Meacher Major Pain Boxing Club's next amateur show, "Put Down the Guns and Pick up the Gloves" boxing showcase on Saturday March 30t0 starting at 7pm at the Wulff Road Boxing Square.

The Meacher Major Pain Boxing Club continues to do its part in promoting the sport of boxing locally, particularly among the youth of the nation, as it gets set to host its third tournament next weekend.

On Saturday March 30, starting at 7 p.m. at the Wulff Road Boxing Square, the club will stage the "Put Down the Guns and Pick up the Gloves" boxing showcase, which is open to all clubs interested in participating. The card is set to feature 12 amateur fights, however, the final match-ups have not been finalized as yet.

"We've gotten a lot of feedback from the various clubs around the island and we look forward to putting on a good show," said Major.

"We're currently the number one club in The Bahamas, after winning five tournaments last year. We also won the first tournament of 2016 last month, which was hosted by Ray Minus and Champion Amateur Boxing Club (CABC). I know they're going to come out looking for revenge, so me and Kaito Ferguson, who is my club's head coach, will have to really prepare our fighters."

Major hopes that next Saturday's event will be one of several tournaments that they host this year as they work to get their fighters more experience through local events.

"This is really something we're doing to improve the kids and give them something to do, and it's also a chance for them to see their practice paying off," Major said.

"We're living in a place where our youth are witnessing murders and all sorts of other things, so this gives them something to strive for. We're encouraging the kids to get off the streets and channel some of that anger into something positive. That is the main reasoning behind the event's theme. Too many kids are idle with no sense of direction and we hope that we can get even more to put down the guns and pick up the gloves."

Major extends special courtesy to the club's sponsors, who helped to make the tournament a reality. They include Buttons Bridal and Formal Wear, the d'Albenas Agency Ltd. and Quick And Fast Welding.
