The College of The Bahamas announces administrative changes

The College of The Bahamas recently announced changes within its Senior Administration.


Dr. Earla Carey-Baines.
Dr. Carey-Baines, Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs has indicated that she will be returning to her position as a member of the faculty of the College. The College is deeply appreciative for the years of stellar service provided by Dr. Carey-Baines. She began serving in administrative positions in 2005, first as Dean of the Faculty of Liberal and Fine Arts followed by Acting Dean of Social Sciences, then as Interim Associate Vice President, Northern Bahamas Campus; Executive Vice President/Vice President, Academic Affairs; and President. She served the College in two separate capacities as Interim President until a President was officially appointed by the College.

In the execution of these roles she has demonstrated great leadership, a deep commitment to excellence and concern for organizational effectiveness. The College wishes to thank Dr. Carey-Baines for her unwavering commitment to the College of the Bahamas and its affairs. She has demonstrated support of the goals and objectives of the institution. For this we are indeed grateful and look forward to her continued high quality of service as she embraces new roles as we build the University of The Bahamas.

The College of The Bahamas Council, upon recommendation of the President, has awarded Dr. Carey-Baines a one semester sabbatical; after which, she will return in the capacity of Associate Professor in the School of English Studies and serve as University Editor for the University of The Bahamas.


Dr. Pandora Johnson.
Effective immediately, Dr. Pandora Johnson will serve in the capacity of Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs / Provost. Dr. Johnson, a highly experienced academic administrator, has served previously in several administrative capacities; including Coordinator of the UWI/COB Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Education, Director of Research, Vice President of Research, Planning and Development and Vice President of Outreach. She is a graduate of the following institutions: Sir George Williams University, Concordia University and University of Toronto.


Dr. Maria E. Woodside-Oriakhi.
Dr. Oriakhi, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Science, Mathematics, Physics and Technology has been appointed to the position of Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective January 4th 2016. Dr. Oriakhi, a professor with stellar teaching and administrative experiences previously served in several capacities, including Mathematics Coordinator for Continuing Education and Extension Services, Coordinator of Basic College Mathematics, College Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics and Data Analysis, Chairperson. She has pioneered the On-line teaching and learning at the College of the Bahamas and has been the country and College representative in several countries in the Commonwealth and the Region. She has been instrumental in leading innovations designed to improve efficiencies and effectiveness in the delivery of instruction and design of assessment. She is a graduate of the following institutions: University of Georgia, University of Sussex and Brunel University.


Dr. Dion D. D. Hepburn.
The College announces the appointment of Assistant Professor Dr. Dion Hepburn as the new Director of Research. This pivotal position will greatly assist the institution in transitioning from a comprehensive liberal arts college to that of a comprehensive university with an emphasis on teaching and research with a strong liberal arts undergirding. Dr. Hepburn previously served as Chairperson School of Chemistry, Environmental and Life Sciences, Chairperson of the Health and Safety Committee (COB), Facilitator in the University Transition Secretariat, Principal Investigator of the Blue Water Grant at the College of the Bahamas, College representative on the Bahamas National Trust Council and a previous co-coordinator of the Bahamas Natural History Conference, a participant of the Harvard Executive Education Programme, a reviewer for the international journal Biological Trace Element Research and was a member of the steering committee for the development and formation of the Bahamas Agricultural and Marine Science Institute. He is a graduate of the following institutions: University of North Alabama and the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
