The Bahamas Press Club yesterday announced plans to honor pioneers in the field of journalism and mass communications in The Bahamas.

During a press conference at the British Colonial Hilton, Anthony Newbold, the club's president announced that on Saturday, November 21, seven people will be "rewarded for their selfless contributions to media in The Bahamas".

"One of those persons will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award and one will be honored posthumously, while the others will be branded as pioneers," Newbold said.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to Eileen Dupuch Carron for her more than 50 years of dedicated and courageous work at the Tribune newspaper, with the last 43 of those years sitting in the publisher/editor's chair.

The posthumous honor will go to the late Kenneth N. Francis, who rose from being a press operator at The Nassau Guardian to becoming the publisher and general manager of one of the oldest newspapers in the region, established in 1844.

The Pioneer Awards will go to Wendall Jones, of Jones Communications Network, for private radio broadcasting (Love 97 FM), newspaper (Bahama Journal), and television (JCN); Anthony Ferguson, Guardian Talk Radio (96.9 FM); Henry Saunders, (More 94 FM); Silbert Mills, Radio Abaco, and the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, ZNS radio and television.

The awards ceremony will be held under the distinguished patronage of former Governor General Sir Arthur Foulkes, himself a distinguished journalist. The event will be held at the Hilton.

"This is the first such event for the Bahamas Press Club but we expect that honoring our own will become a yearly happening," Newbold said.

In the coming weeks, more details will be revealed about the event, including a guest speaker. A four course dinner with wine will be served. Members of the media are being asked to support this event celebrating and honoring the profession.
