Christie thinks convention should be put off

Prime Minister Perry Christie said yesterday he believes the Progressive Liberal Party's (PLP) convention, set for the first week in November, should be postponed, but he felt it should be up to the other leaders of the party to make that determination.

"I think it is fair for me as the leader of the government to allow the party leaders to make the decision," Christie said. "And so, I will rely on their good judgment in these matters."

The PLP's Convention Committee met last night to formally decide to postpone the convention. However, when asked whether he believes the convention should be postponed, Christie said, "Yes." He said the country is gripped by a major crisis in the aftermath of Hurricane Joaquin, which has adversely affected hundreds of Bahamian families. The category four storm battered the several of the southeastern Family Islands on October 1 and 2.

"The next several months in The Bahamas there must be extraordinary focus placed on those islands," Christie said.

"... Some big decisions have to be made on those islands with respect to infrastructure; whether or not people should continue to live in particular areas; if they live in those areas and exercise that choice, what kind of building controls there should be to guide them?"
