The Bahamas Alumni Chapter of Florida Memorial University, Miami, Florida, during its Alumni Week, will ‘Honour the Legacy’ of the institution during an official visit to the Bahamas of its President-Elect, Dr. Roslyn Clark-Artis, April 19-24, 2015.
President of the local alumni association, Carol Smith, says “Dr. Clarke-Artis has gladly accepted our invitation to the Bahamas and to embrace the talent and potential that she will surely find in young Bahamian students.
“This visit could not have come at a better time as the nation’s youth are in need of constant encouragement and hope” she says.
“Florida Memorial University can be that hope for anyone who is willing to fight for a future— a future that is guaranteed with hard work, and a commitment to self discipline and perseverance.
“We welcome the president to our islands, and continue to celebrate the works of Bahamian alumni’s worldwide who continue to strengthen the legacy of greatness".Ms. Smith said the university president’s visit is not only timely – it is necessary. “Florida Memorial University and The Bahamas have always shared a mutual understanding and that is solely based on the notion that education is indeed invaluable. The visit of the President-Elect will give the Chapter the opportunity to, not only highlight the professional achievements of various local alumni, but also to promote Florida Memorial University as a viable option for Bahamians wanting to study abroad.
Florida Memorial University’s Alumni Association (Bahamas Chapter) will launch a week of activities this coming Sunday, April 19, 2015, at Zion Baptist Church, East and Shirley Streets. Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, along with executive members of the college’s administration, local alumni, and friends of the institution will participate in a variety of activities intended to promote the institution as a viable option for studying abroad.
The Alumni Association will use this opportunity to highlight the professional achievements of various local alumni who will be honored at Government House on Wednesday April 22, 6:30pm. This year’s award recipients are Senator Sharon Wilson (Legacy Lifetime Achievement), Elsie Simmons and Carolyn Roberts (Education), Antoine Clarke (Medicine), Harrison Thompson and Valarie Dean (Civic), Father Enrique McCartney (Religion), Alfred Forbes (Sports), and Kevin Hanna (Financial Services).
The Alumni Association will facilitate a recruitment fair on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Living Waters Ministries 10:00 am where interested high school students are invited to attend. The visit will culminate on Friday evening with a Legacy Reception at the National Art Gallery.
The Association boasts a strong network of professionals who have made influential strides in civic, and community development including the likes of Rev. Enoch Beckford III, Pastor of Mt. Carey Baptist Church (Class of 1968), Melanie Zonicle, Director Department of Social Services, and Freddie Munnings, a noted musician and entrepreneur. The Association also has the responsibility to ensure that the achievements of former students, those currently enrolled, and those who will attend in the future be forever acknowledged, and celebrated.
The Bahamas Chapter of the Alumni Association works closely with the institution for many reasons. The primary purpose however, is to support the development and growth of Florida Memorial University, to promote fellowship and social activity among the Bahamian alumni community of the University, and to organize fundraising initiatives to provide scholarships to perspective Bahamian students.
