A young mother was shot dead on Prison Lane just before 10 o'clock last night moments after she picked up her four-year-old son, police said.

Superintendent Paul Rolle told reporters at the scene that the woman was walking back to her vehicle after collecting the child from relatives or friends when a man walked up to her and shot her.

When The Nassau Guardian arrived on the scene, the woman's body was lying on the ground next to a house. She was reportedly shot to the upper body.

Distraught relatives shouted, 'What did she do?', as they fought to get past police officers.

Details surrounding the country's latest murder were sketchy.

The woman's identity was not revealed.

Rolle appealed to anyone with information on the murder to contact police right away. He said police did not know what the motive was but were "following several leads".

This was the second murder this week. The murder count in The Bahamas this year is now 35.
