As regulation and legislation become increasingly detailed and demanding, the role of the Director is becoming more risky.

Directors are now faced with personal liability for failure to discharge their duties prudently.

In its efforts to equip and develop Directors for today’s environment, the Bahamas Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors (Bahamas IIA) launched the first ever roll-out of the Global Corporate Governance Forum (GCGF) highly-acclaimed curriculum for directors in The Bahamas last September at The Balmoral on Sanford Drive.

Next week, on September 2nd, The Bahamas IIA will continue its initiative and partner with The Bahamas Institute of Financial Services (BIFS) to offer the complete 16-module Board Leadership program.

The initial launch of the Board Leadership Training program included a train the trainer (ToT) event to build the capacity of director trainers in region.

Twelve professionals from The Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, and Barbados successfully completed the GCGF’s ToT program and obtained critical skills and resources needed to build sustainable director training programs and revolutionize the training provided to directors of companies.

The Board Leadership program received rave reviews at the Bahamas IIA’s first workshop, “Good Governance Beyond Compliance” on October 2nd, 2013 with 50+ directors and company executives in The Bahamas actively participating.

On September 2nd, 2014, the Bahamas IIA will leverage its network of Corporate Governance Trainers to partner with BIFS on the complete roll-out of the 16-module Board Leadership program via an eight-week evening course.

The interactive training modules will focus on corporate governance systems, roles and responsibilities of directors, key dilemmas facing directors, risk governance, risk management, internal control frameworks, corporate finance and financial reporting, among other topics.

This course is intended to provide tools and information needed to prudently perform as a Director. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how a principle-based governance framework can improve an organization’s control environment.

Participants will utilize a case study to trace the evolution of a hypothetical company as it considers Corporate Governance reforms. This course is appropriate for individuals who currently serve on Boards or intend to participate in governance practices in the future.

It can add value to individuals responsible for designing corporate governance programs/systems, and company executives who interact with Directors regularly.
