The needed belt-tightening

During the last budget debate the government announced it had to borrow $722 million to cover the shortfall from the last fiscal year, along with what's projected for this one. I read with interest that the Seat Belt law is about to be enforced and I thought I'd like to make a few comments. As somebody who recognises the advantage of wearing the seat belts it's obviously about time and I thoroughly agree with this law.

Seat belt law comes into effect today

POLICE will be posted at various points throughout New Providence today to enforce the seat belt law, which has been on the statute books since 2002. They will be checking vehicles and handing out information pamphlets.

Seat belt law confusion

Government officials seem to be confused about which part of the law should be used to enforce the seat belt regulations set to come into effect next week.

Senior police officials at the Traffic Division, responsible for enforcing the seat belt law, did not appear knowledgeable about the schedule of fines outlined in the 2007 amendment to the Road Traffic Act.
