Loose lips and political ignorance

Dear Editor,

There was a time long ago when I dared to believe that Dr. Hubert A. Minnis (FNM - Killarney) possessed the 'stuff' of which prime ministers are made. In fact, I prophesied his rise to high office as leader of the opposition a few months before the general elections of 2012. He did not appear to believe me, but the rest is history.
For many months after his elevation, following the d...

We need policy, not pandering

"Your Free National Movement government will engage and execute a real sale of Baha Mar to a qualified and respectable purchaser who believes in Bahamians; a purchaser who will utilize only Bahamian labor to complete the resort, and will put Bahamians back to work with real jobs as quickly as possible." This statement by Dr. Hubert Minnis, leader of the Free National Movement (FNM), was, simply pu...

The flavor renderer

A "Bahamian-ized" version of a popular Japanese street food known a takoyaki (a popular Japanese street food served traditionally with bits of octopus or other alternatives, inside a slightly crispy shell) was just one of a number of elevated food items culinary artist Chef Ron Johnson showcased for the Bahamian palate at the fourth annual Festival RumBahamas. His version entailed lobster and plan...

The unraveling of Perry Christie

It is sad to see what has become of Perry Christie, our prime minister. That he thought it was a good idea to stand up on a community parade in Fox Hill and stick up his middle finger in front of everyone should indicate all is not well with a man who was once so admired and loved.
Odd things have been happening with Christie for some time. At the North Abaco by-election he referenced that even af...

Disturbing disconnect

The conflicting messages from Prime Minister Perry Christie and Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade on the state of crime in The Bahamas -- New Providence in particular -- have done nothing to comfort the many Bahamians gripped by fear over the alarming rate of violence.
Telling us that criminals are killing criminals, not choirboys, as Greenslade did on Monday, is not enough. With seven men...

Two more from the excellent crop of this year's Best Picture nominees

As usual, with the Super Bowl last weekend, there was very little of significance or worth watching in theaters. As such, I used the time to sample my final two of the nine movies nominated for Best Picture in this year's Academy Awards.
Sadly, neither of these two dramas, "Manchester by the Sea" or "Hell or High Water" has played here in The Bahamas as yet, but they are among the best-acted, writ...

The Bahamian political ostrich

Dear Editor,
"Any fool can turn a blind eye, but who knows what the ostrich sees in the sand."
"In the land of the ostriches, the blind are king. When politicians bury their head in the sand, ignorance rules the country."
Regardless of the results of the 2012 general election the Free National Movement was a strong party, but the people were tired of its disrespect.
The present political climate i...

Leaving the sidelines: 'Show up. Dive in. Persevere'

I watched with mixed emotions as the outgoing president of the United States (POTUS), President Barack Obama, delivered his farewell speech in Chicago where it all began. The skinny kid with the funny name from the south side of Chicago (as Obama often described himself) was taking a bow after writing his name in gold on the pages of U.S. history. A man who is literally an African-American - half ...

2016 is, mercifully, drawing to a close and we who are privileged to leap into 2017 will be witnesses to history even as it continues to unfold.
This year was a challenging one for many of us. The economy, while improving, is still not ticking on four cylinders. Crime is trending down but is still too high. Many families have lost homes due to any number of factors. The political dir...
