Matthew Town Torn Apart

Along the roads there were signs of devastation everywhere. Roofs were caved in, large trees were uprooted, glass had been blown out of many buildings, and many utility poles and lines were leveled.
Up to Tuesday evening the island of Inagua was still without light, water and landline telephone services.

Morton Salt To Close Indefinitely

The economy of Inagua has been dealt a crippling blow with the indefinite closure of Morton Salt.

Sunday's passage of Hurricane Ike totally destroyed Morton's main building and melted tons of salt in its salt pans, forcing management to cease operations at the establishment, the island's main economic engine.
