Dr. Javier Francisco-Ortega, associate professor at Florida International University and Fairchild Tropical Gardens, is a world-renowned scientist with expertise in natural history and conservation. He publishes in top-level scientific journals each year and has worked with FIU and Fairchild since 1999, teaching and mentoring college and graduate students working toward careers in the environmental sciences. During that time he has built a global network of collaborators and partner institutions that work to study and conserve global biodiversity. Rooted in Fairchild's exploration, his studies have a strong field component and focus on plants that are endemic to tropical and subtropical islands. Dr. Ortega manages the Fairchild challenge, a multidisciplinary environmental education programme that serves K-12
students in South Florida and 10 other locations worldwide
