SUPERVALUE IN 'OVER 20' XMAS SALES RISE
By NEIL HARTNELL
Tribune Business Editor
THE SUPERVALUE supermarket chain saw a more than 20 per cent year-over-year increase in its Christmas sales figures, its owner and president telling Tribune Business yesterday the company was likely to invest a further $500,000 on store upgrades during the 2012 first quarter.
Rupert Roberts said the Yuletide holiday top-line "could have done 10 per cent better" had it not been for customer service problems caused by hiring additional staff late in 2011 to cope with the holiday rush.
He added that Supervalue had invested some $1 million since last summer in upgrades across the 11 store chain, focusing on providing more check-out aisles and ca ...

THE SUPERVALUE supermarket chain yesterday indicated it shrugged off fears that consumers are taking longer every year to recover from their Christmas spending, with its sales increases for January and February 2012 "double and triple" 2011 comparatives.
Rupert Roberts, Supervalue's owner and president, told Tribune Business that the inelastic nature of demand for its grocery products, coupled with the demise of Robin Hood and City Markets' struggles, had helped his 10-store chain to escape the recession's worst effects and generate consistent year-over ...
Supervalue chief opposes grocery store booze sales
Supervalue president Rupert Roberts yesterday came out against any plans the Government might have to grant grocery stores the right to sell liquor in-house to their customers, a move which rival retailers and at least one local liquor manufacturer have expressed their support for.
Meanwhile, some small liquor retailers told Tribune Business yesterday they would fear being pushed out of business if grocery stores were permitted to sell liquor.
Supervalue 'hedges bets' on energy, food rises
Supervalue is dusting off plans to bulk purchase in advance in a bid to head off escalating food prices expected to hit later this year, its president and owner also expressing fears that energy prices might "double" during 2011.
With commodity price increases an emerging threat that might knock any Bahamian economic recovery off course, Rupert Roberts told Tribune Business that the grocery chain would employ the methods it used in 2008 to try and protect the Bahamian consumer from impending food price increases.
Noting that staples such as cooking oil and tuna appeared to be rising once again, Mr Roberts told Tribune Business he had informed his ...

Consumers told to brace for price rises
By ALISON LOWE

As Florida farmers continued to count the cost of the lowest temperatures in the state since the 1960s, wholesalers and retailers yesterday warned Bahamian consumers to be prepared for potential spikes in produce prices in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, major local wholesaler, Bahamas Food Services, suggested any destruction of crops in Florida may signal a silver lining for Bahamian agricultural producers in the form of increased revenue opportunities. Mike Leslie, of Sun International Produce, Florida, Supervalue's primary produce wholesaler, told Tribune Business the impact of the record breaking temperature lows this week, while not f ...
