The Salus Project presents
"5 Elements, 5 Artists" Exhibition
TONIGHT: Thursday, May 17 at 7pm
The Ladder Gallery, NPCC, Blake Road
The Salus Project is proud to launch its inaugural exhibition entitled "5 Elements, 5 Artists" opening tonight, Thursday, May 17 at 7pm at The Ladder Gallery, New Providence Community Centre on Blake Road.
The Salus Project is the brainchild of healthcare givers Dr. Graham Cates and his wife, Nurse Anita Cates. This project was born from their shared passion for Wellness and Art. The inaugural exhibition features student artists from The College of The Bahamas and will run for four weeks at the Ladder Gallery and then move up the road to the Project's home gallery – The Salus Gallery – located at the Cates' Family Medicine Center on Blake Road.
Salus is Latin for Wholeness, Wellness and Salvation and, therefore, is a perfect name for the Gallery and for the project itself. Nurse Cates explains, "Beauty, Art and Wellness are core values upheld by the New Providence Community Centre and that’s one of the reasons why the show is being launched there. It will then be moved to The Salus Gallery at the Family Medicine Center."
"The Salus Gallery is a new gallery which breaks through the traditional gallery setting and brings art into public places of care to assist in the healing of patients and to bring about a deeper understanding of Wellness and Art."

"Emotional Wellness" by Yutavia George - "I define emotional wellness as the ability to be aware of one’s feelings. This work emphasizes the effects of stress and illustrates the need to change ones’ perception of difficult situations as a first step to realize the opportunities stored in struggle."

"Financial Wellness" by Preston Hanna - "I define financial wellness as being responsible for one’s family. This work illustrates a man whose negative financial decisions caused him his family stability; more importantly caused him to lose his son."
The artists worked on individual pieces that reflect the five elements of Wellness: Physical, Emotional, Social, Financial and Spiritual where the concept of Wellness being integral to a more successful life is employed.
Dr Cates explains, “The Salus Project will have an amazing impact on our clients and staff as it is a wonderful opportunity for new and seasoned artists to showcase their work within a healing environment.” Nurse Cates adds, “Combining Wellness and Creativity has been a dream of ours and The Salus Project is the product of following that dream.”

A few of the artists participating in The Salus Project inaugural exhibition: Yutavia George, Kachelle Knowles and Preston Hanna.

Public Treasury Art Programme (PTAP) is Nurturing Brotherhood
Opening Reception:
Friday, May 18th 2012
Public Treasury Building, East Bay Street 6:30pm-8:30pm
Last fall, the Public Treasury Department celebrated the launch of its new art initiative, the Public Treasury Art Programme (PTAP), which transformed the foyers of its building into gallery spaces to showcase original art by both professional and emerging artists.
After its well received five-month inaugural exhibition ‘Bahama Mama’, an amalgamation of visual and literary works from twenty-five talented Bahamian female artists and writers, PTAP will be returning this May with an exciting new exhibition, ‘Nurturing Brotherhood’. PTAP aims to build upon its reputation for empowering aspiring artists by allowing art students to take center stage of the creative arts industry.
‘Nurturing Brotherhood’ will not only exhibit work from some of the most talented men in The Bahamas, but also mark the beginning of a promising mentorship programme. In an effort to unify the young male Bahamian community through the arts, PTAP has paired both professional artists and designers with high school students to produce a body of work that they will exhibit alongside each other.
PTAP invites the general public to attend the opening of the exhibition on Friday, May 18th 2012 to support these young men and their journey that serves as creative building blocks for the future of our nation’s young men.
Participating Artists:
Allan P. Wallace, Andret John, Anthony 'Big Mo' Morley, Damaso Gray, Desmond Darville, Dion Lewis, Ellery Deveaux, Jace McKinney, Kenon Grant, Kishan Munroe, Lou Lihou, Omar Richardson, Scharad Lightbourne, Sheldon Saint, Shieko Hoyte, Theodore Sealy, and Zyandric Jones

The Hub Gallery presents
"ART Amuse Bouche"
Sunday, May 20 from 2-4pm
The Hub Gallery, Bay Street
“An amuse-bouche (amoos-boosh) is a single, bite-sized hors d’oeuvre, different from an appetiser, in that it is not ordered, but offered, according to the chef’s selection alone—a “delight of the mouth” to offer a glimpse into the culinary artist’s approach.
Grand Bahama artist Susan Moir Mackay

On Sunday, May 20th 2012, from 2 - 4pm, The Hub Gallery on Bay Street in Nassau is hosting an exhibition of artwork from Grand Bahama artist, Susan Moir Mackay. Mackay’s themes look beyond the surface of our lives, into deeper truths, often using everyday items and more stirring objects, like bones and blood. Her pieces resonate in both universal questions, and personal reflections, giving life to thoughts regarding society, women, healing, love and pain, and oftentimes the viewer’s habitual perspective is challenged. Mackay will be on hand at The Hub to chat about this sampling of her diverse work, sharing insights and commentary about her intention, inspiration, and process.
Susan Moir Mackay is a BA (Hons) graduate from Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland: An impassioned advocate for the importance of art for both individuals and communities, she has made Grand Bahama her home, where she shares her creative enthusiasms with her two children and the community-based art organization she co-founded, Art Nucleus and writes an art column for The Bahamas Weekly.

Synopsis
Set in a fictional Bahamas, “Judgment in Paradise” tells the story of a families experience leading up to the Mayan predicted end of The Bahamas on December 21, 2012. Although the main plot focuses on the Willshine family, the audience is given a peak into the desperate sphere of Bahamian politics, religion as salvation, and the perceived ethos of the average Bahamian.
Life and existence as Bahamians know it hangs in the balance as foreign investment, familial ties and social constructs clash to provide a thrilling experience that interrogates Bahamian lived experience.
24 year old Destiny Willshine competes with every other citizen for her father’s attention and consideration. Visually impaired from a very young age she proves that having physical sight does not translate into wisdom and reasoning.
Destiny’s father, Christian Willshine is one of the leading protagonists as he establishes the corrupting and blinding influence of power and selfish desire.
Representative of the moral and value system of times past, Grandpa Willshine, who is also the Reverend at End Times Ministries, portray the changed Bahamian lived experience through his interaction with Destiny, Christian and Chance.
The youth living in ‘Paradise’, Chance and Shanice, critique the traditional Bahamian roles of young men and women operating in a world of partying and drugs, they seem detached from the reality.
The title of the play spells doom, not for the world, but The Bahamas. Priorities are questioned, relationships destroyed, countries are sold and The Bahamas is sinking. ‘Judgement’ is abounding. A critical play that forces an analysis of the realities Bahamians live daily.
NOTE: This play is something that you do not want to miss. Mark the date May 25 & 26, 2012 on your calendar. The play will be staged at the College of the Bahamas’ Performing Arts Center. Stay tuned for ticket and other information. COMING SOON, if the end doesn’t happen before then!
