Nagasaki, 1904. A young American officer, B.F. Pinkerton, stationed in Japan, marries a young geisha, Chio-Chio-San (Japanese for "Madam Butterfly"). For him, the marriage is simply a means of exotic entertainment, but is taken quite seriously by the young Japanese girl. After the ceremony, and after having left her with a child, Pinkerton leaves the country. Hoping that he'll return to her, she remains faithful and refuses numerous marriage proposals. Three years later, Pinkerton returns to Japan with his new American wife.

This film is especially for music and opera lovers as it contains much singing.
