Hispanic Spotlight

LA CORI, 17, window shops with a concentration bordering on obsession. Her tempestuous dark beauty draws stares of passers-by. Sharing her taut sexuality is her lover, EL GUIRIPI. A rush of mini-DV images dissects LA CORI: her face, hands, feet, backside, and breasts. They are shot furtively by EL NETO, 23, an aspiring filmmaker who has chanced upon her. From afar, inadvertently, he captures the pair shoplifting prized pink Converse tennis coveted by LA CORI, for a hilltop shantytown "colombiano" ball. For it is the young slum dwellers of Monterrey --Mexico’s industrial capital and third largest metropolitan area with 4 million people-- that have developed a distinctive "colombiano" style that is all their own.  CUMBIA CONNECTION narrates the love story pivoting on LA CORI, pitting EL NETO and EL GUIRIPI fiercely at odds over a woman whose unshakable link to the two is "colombiano" music. The three characters are driven together by the magnetic pull of "colombiano", which has magically transformed their lives.
