Atlantis, Paradise Island is forging ahead in its commitment to help eradicate illiteracy in The Bahamas. The famed mega-resort property recently wrapped up its 2nd annual ‘Books Bringing The Beats’ song competition for Primary and Junior High School student choirs, naming St. Thomas More most victorious amongst the participating schools.

The competition, which required participants to bring the wondrous world of Atlantis to life through song, was hosted in the Atlantis Theatre on Wednesday, March 12th and featured the talents of students from St. Thomas More, Gerald Cash, Garvin Tynes, Meridian, Hope Academy, St. Cecelia’s, and The Remnant Academy.

The St. Thomas More choir, with some 32 students in all, stole the show and the hearts of the judges – all music enthusiasts living in The Bahamas – with their winning rendition of “The Myth of Atlantis.”

Organizers, pleased with the turn out and contributions from the local school community, reveled in the charged atmosphere and excitement that such a positive and worthwhile event fostered. The winner was determined based on originality, composition, melody, and lyrics and performance.

The Atlantis Against Illiteracy initiative, the brainchild of Atlantis Librarian Stephaney Davis, hopes to foster a love and desire for reading through creative and fun ways with ultimate aim of giving the nation’s youth every opportunity to succeed and thrive at every possible reading level. A number of cool prizes were also raffled as part of the event.
