Local GM car dealer 'did not import' recalled vehicles

The local authorized retailer for General Motors said that the major recall of certain types of GM cars does not affect their operation as it has never imported the models involved.
Rick Lowe, operations manager for the Nassau Motor Company, said that the decision by General Motors to recall the 1.6 million vehicles could still impact Bahamians if they imported the cars privately or bought them from a second-hand dealer on the island.
In this case, he advised local vehicle owners to contact their dealer.
General Motors has recalled a number of vehicles manufactured between the years 2003 and 2007 in light of a potentially deadly defect involving ignition switches.
In affected cars, the ignition switches can shut off car motors unexpectedly. When that happens, drivers lose power-assisted steering and brakes and can lose control of the cars.
The recall involves more than 780,000 Cobalts and Pontiac G5s (model years 2005-2007), 842,000 Saturn Ion compacts (2003-2007), Chevrolet HHR SUVs and Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky sports cars (2006-2007).
The fault has been linked to 31 crashes and 13 deaths, and GM has come under fire over its handling of the recall.
"We were never allowed to bring those in," said Lowe. "Anyone who has one should contact the dealer or retailer where they bought the vehicle and they will advise them."
Only in the case where the Nassau Motor Company has imported the model involved would the car manufacturer notify the company of the recall. In this case, NMC would be contractually obliged to attempt to notify its customers of the announcement.
