The Nassau Guardian has announced the appointment of Brent Dean as general manager and editor, and Candia Dames as managing editor effective Monday, February 24.
Dean will serve as chief executive officer at the Guardian group of companies. This includes The Nassau Guardian, The Freeport News, Guardian Radio, Star 106.5 FM, Print Masters and the company's interest in NB12. He will have day-to-day oversight of the media group and will report to the board of the company.
"I want to thank the owners of The Nassau Guardian for demonstrating their confidence in me," said Dean, who currently serves as associate editor at the newspaper.
"We have the best team of media professionals in the country. I am enthused to have the opportunity to work with them in this capacity to further solidify our newspapers and broadcast divisions as the favorites for Bahamians and our readers, listeners and viewers around the world."
Dean joined The Guardian in January 2009. He previously worked at The Tribune and Jones Communications.
Dean is a graduate of Queen's College in The Bahamas and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where he earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies.
Dames will oversee the editorial department of The Nassau Guardian. She is a graduate of The College of The Bahamas, Clark Atlanta University and University of Maryland at College Park. She also holds a bachelor's degree in mass communications and a master's degree in journalism.
Dames, who has been a journalist for 19 years, is a former editor of The Bahama Journal, where she cut her journalistic teeth and benefited from many valuable years of on-the-job training. She joined The Nassau Guardian in August 2008 as its news editor.
"I embrace my new role with much excitement and thank the company's owners for the opportunity to serve as managing editor. I must also pay tribute to my good friend and predecessor in this role Erica Wells," said Dames.
"She did an amazing job for The Nassau Guardian for eight years, and is to be commended for the leadership she displayed while here. I hope to build on the base that has already been set and to help drive The Nassau Guardian to new heights."
Dames replaces Wells, who has moved on from the company, as managing editor.
The Nassau Guardian thanked Wells for her work at the company. She led the news division during a period of tremendous growth and expansion to the success it is today.
