Case of men accused of cop's attempted murder to resume

The attempted murder trial of two men accused of attempting to rob a policeman is expected to resume today.
The trial of Maurice Armbrister and Excel Josey began on January 27 but continued in the absence of the jury for two weeks.

They are accused of the April 10, 2013 attempted murder of Superintendent Clayton Fernander during a failed bid to rob him of his gold chain outside his home in Fairview Heights.

They have denied the allegations at their trial before Justice Carolita Bethell.

During the first day of trial, Fernander's neighbor, Kelson Roberts, testified that he saw a white four-door Acura speed past shortly before Fernander pulled his red Ford Explorer into his driveway shortly after 9 p.m.

Roberts said he was at his landlord's door when he heard a scream followed by a single gunshot.

He said he then saw Fernander running behind the Acura that he had seen previously.

Roberts said he noticed Fernander was holding his hand when he came back and went inside his home.

Jamal Taylor, whose parents are Roberts' landlords, said he was upstairs getting the key to open the door for Roberts when he heard two gunshots.

Taylor said he looked through the window and saw two men running away.

They were dressed in dark clothing and had cloths covering their faces, he said. Taylor said the men were slim and about 5 feet, 10 inches tall.

He said there was a surveillance system at his home and police retrieved the system's DVR.

Wayne Munroe represents Armbrister and Romona Farquharson-Seymour represents Josey.

Neil Brathwaite, the assistant director of public prosecutions, and Kristin Stubbs, appear for the Crown.
