Members of the Johnson's Lady Truckers basketball team were not shaken at all by the new uniforms and colorful sneakers worn by the Bommer G. Operators in Saturday's game.
Penial Bain, the Truckers' Head Coach, said: "Uniforms don't make a team. They are the same old players just wearing new clothes."
Sporting the colors of the Miami Dolphins, the defending champions Operators fell to the Truckers on Saturday night, 70-67. Despite coming to the game late, Shantell Rolle closed the game with a double-double. Latoya Rolle also stepped for the Truckers with a double-double of her own. She led all scorers with 22 points and added 19 rebounds. Shantell Rolle scored 21 points and added 11 rebounds. She also had five assists. Latoya Rolle contributed two steals. Their teammate Glenda Gilcud scored 17 points.
Bain said: "We came out flat in the first half but as a result of our defensive pressure we were able to take control of the game in the third quarter. In the fourth, the Operators made a late run but two huge buckets by Shantell Rolle and Glenda Gilcud sealed the deal for us."
The Operators were holding on to a five-point lead when Shantell Rolle and Gilcud came into the game. The Operators increased their lead, but when Shantell Rolle and Gilcud settled in, the Truckers scored six points and held the Operators to just four. The team was down by just three heading into the second quarter.
When they returned to the court, reserve guard Sasha Ferguson came alive for the Operators. She connected on two jumpers, giving the Operators a six-point lead. Latoya Rolle ended the scoring drought with two free throws. The Operators won the second quarter and headed into the half with a 38-32 lead.
Midway through the third, the Truckers took control of the game, taking the lead for the first time. Gilcud's jumper started a 9-0 run for the Truckers. Even though the Operators made a comeback, the Truckers kept their composure and held on to a five-point lead at the end of three. With three minutes remaining in the game, the Operators pulled even at 60, but Gilcud, and Latoya and Shantell Rolle teamed up to expand their lead. Ann Bullard also chipped in.
Four of the Operators closed in double digits. The top scorer was Sharelle Cash with 15 points, Chrishanda Rahming and Vernisha Moss both had 11 and Diasti Delancey added 10 points.
