Pitcher Ernestine Butler-Stubbs had her infielders behind her on Saturday night as they proved they didn't mind getting down and dirty for ground balls.
Knowing how important the second game in the best-of-seven championship series was, the Sigma Brackettes came to the Banker's Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex with their bats heated, and it showed in the fourth and fifth innings as they got past the Proper Care Pool Sharks, 13-4. In fact, the Brackettes got a strong performance from their defense to go up two games to none in the series.
Butler-Stubbs gave up nine hits and four runs, but she said she's not worried about the four runs given up. In fact, she is confident that her team could hold off all threats posed by the Sharks.
"You might just see the brooms come out on Thursday," Butler-Stubbs noted. She believes that the heat from the mound and defensive plays from her teammates can help them pull it off.
"In all things we must give God thanks," said Butler-Stubbs. "I want to thank the sponsor for believing in this team, the coaches for putting it together and the players for coming out every night and performing at a high standard. This team is unbelievable, and as long as we stick together we can't be beaten. We proved that and now we only need to seal it with a win.
"The game tonight (Saturday) was a perfect display of the talent that is on this team. The game is made up of hits, runs and errors. When you're able to cut down on the errors, hit the ball effectively and make the runs when need them, you will win. We are strong and come Tuesday you will see our strength come out even more. This might be the first time for a lot of the girls, playing in the championship, but they are playing like true champions, and I want to thank them for that."
Tagged with the loss was Alex Gabriel who gave up 10 hits, and had to deal with the many errors made by her teammates. Ann Bullard had the hot bat for the Brackettes, scoring two runs and driving in two. Teammate Theota Williams came across the home plate three times and batted in one run while Shequel Smith scored two runs and had two RBIs.
Game Three will be played on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. over at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
