A Letter to the Government of The Bahamas

Mon, Apr 22nd 2013, 09:58 AM

Good day. I, Dominique Brown, a 25 year old resident of Nassau, Bahamas, wish to politely inform you of the daily observations that heavily concern me as a young citizen of this country. Technology and social media has now made celebrities out of our M.P.'s I am not interested in seeing the fake smile you put on for your constituents, knowing whose home you had Sunday dinner at, read your status of what the opposition DID NOT DO, or be informed of when you are making a PUBLIC APPEARANCE on the parliamentary channel or any other charade for that matter.

I want to know that when I am having an issue within my community, that I can find you at your office. I want to know that the secretary at your office is EDUCATED on public matters and not just your cousin or close friend who you empowered to make a monthly salary! I need to know that when I arrive at the constituency meeting to observe your character, that you are not just there to sign autographs and bring in 'speakers' to fill me with a 'word!' I need YOU to KNOW that I am watching, I am holding you accountable and I ain't got time to play! Our young people learn the following by watching the parliamentary channel:

1. Blame others for your mistakes 2. Effective communication is not important 3. Aim below the belt 4. Avoid the truth 5. Use big words or you will not be deemed as intelligent The first time I drove out Cable Beach after the construction was completed, I cried. We are no longer even good enough to drive inches away from their patrons. We are mentally shackled, physically restrained and emotionally crippled daily by the walls of separation built around us I long to see the day when I meet the true owners of The Bahamas! I want to one day have the privilege of speaking with the people to whom our leaders pledge their allegiance to. I wonder if they look just like you and I.

The message you send daily to me is very clear: there is no room for me as young person within my own home but I assure you, I shall not be moved. My message to young Bahamians everywhere is as follows: We must dream our way out. We must desire more. We must no longer see & fail to believe. We must pray our way through. - I am still encouraged

Signed, The Mentally Awoken!
