Jurors in Aaron Rolle case visit police station

For several weeks, a coroner's jury has heard about the window that suspect Aaron Rolle tried to escape through on February 8.
Jurors finally saw the window that police photographers failed to document when they visited the inquiries room at the Southern Police Station yesterday.
Officers 2126 Akiel Smith and 2648 Carl Smith justified using force to restrain Rolle when he allegedly bolted towards an open window in the inquiries room on the second floor.
Rolle, 20, died from a ruptured intestine caused by blunt force trauma on February 9.
In their testimony, both officers claimed that the window, which faced Market Street, was a push-up window that had no bars or screen.
However, during a visit to the station jurors saw firsthand that there are narrowly-spaced aluminum louvers on the outside of the window.
Supervisor Sgt. 596 Shervard Bain told the court that the windows had not been altered since the incident.
Bain said he walked into the inquiries room on February 8 and saw an overturned desk, overturned chairs and papers strewn over the floor.
He recalled asking the officers, "What's going on?" when he saw the room in disorder.
Bain said 2648 Smith showed him a western window that overlooked Market Street and said that Rolle had tried to escape.
Christina Galanos, who represents the family of the deceased, asked Bain if he thought it was possible that Rolle could get through the louvers.
Bain said Rolle only needed to apply his body weight on the louvers. "If anybody shoved against them, they'd fall out," he said.
In response to a question from Sgt. 561 Lennox Coleby, who represents the officers, Bain said he knew of other escapes from the inquiries room through a window.
However, none of those escapes involved the window in question.
The inquest continues before Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez.
