Man killed in car crash near airport

A man was killed and two others were injured when a dump truck and a rental car collided on Coral Harbour Road near Lake Killarney yesterday.
The MAC truck was traveling south and the silver Chevrolet Aveo was traveling north when the crash occurred just before noon, police said.
Police said the driver of the rental car was crushed on impact and died on the scene.
The car was pinned about two feet above the ground between the guard rail on the eastern side of the road and the front end of the truck. Only the rear end of the car was visible. Car parts including a bumper littered the surrounding area.
Superintendent Ken Strachan, officer in charge of the Police Traffic Division, said the man was trapped in the driver's seat and had to be pulled from the crushed car with the assistance of heavy duty machinery.
Though police could not confirm the victim's identity, airport employees claimed he was a British national due to fly home yesterday.
Strachan called the accident a "horrific one in nature".
"What we can tell you is that the rain was down. It was heavy at the time of this incident, but we don't know all of the contributing factors in relation to this accident," he said.
"Our experts from the various agencies are on scene and we are looking over the scene to form a better understanding."
The driver of the dump truck and his passenger were taken to hospital and were in good condition, but shaken by the ordeal, Strachan said.
The man's death marked the 20th traffic fatality in the country for the year.
The accident has happened during Road Safety Week.
"We cannot over emphasize the need for people to exercise due caution and care as they travel on the streets of The Bahamas," Strachan said.
The portion of Coral Harbour Road between Odyssey airport and Executive Air remained closed for several hours as police processed the scene.
