Police are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Wilson Tract woman who was crushed underneath wreckage when a garbage truck crashed into her home. Wedina Clarke was reportedly the only person unaccounted for after a United Sanitation Services truck ploughed into the Wilson Tract home shortly after 10pm on Friday. Police officers conducted a search of what was left of the home and found Clarke in the bed of the add-on unit, crushed under the truck and wreckage caused by the collision.
Environment Minister Kenred Dorsett, who The Tribune contacted yesterday for details, said that a report will be available “as soon as additional information is made available to us”.“I am waiting on a detailed report on that incident. My understanding is that there is a police investigation into this incident,” the minister said. “And it is also my understanding that it is a truck of one of the privately contracted companies under the Department of Environmental Health to collect garbage. But it’s not one of our trucks,” Mr Dorsett added. Mr Dorsett also expressed his condolences to the family.
“I mourn the loss of life of such a young person with her entire life ahead of her. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased during this very difficult period.” The Tribune understands that the driver was out of the truck assisting with garbage collection when somehow the truck went out of control and ploughed into the structure where it was found by police upon their arrival at the scene.
The police are actively investigating this incident. The family of the teenager was not available for comment. Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding a traffic accident that left a 13-year-old female student of H.O. Nash dead and a 6-year-old boy in hospital in serious condition. The Tribune understands the girl was Denisha Barr of Deans Lane and the boy, Wedner Jhilitte.
They were trying to cross Tonique Williams-Darling Highway on Friday shortly before 5pm when the accident occurred. They were hit by a 2004 Nissan Skyline L/N 233885, travelling east on the highway near Penn Builders Square. The Deans Lane girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The 6-year-old boy, according to police, is still in hospital recovering from his injuries. Superintendent Kendal Strachan, officer in charge of the Traffic Division, said investigations are continuing.
