An elderly man perished in a house fire in Great Harbour Cay yesterday morning, police reported. The man, 69, is the third person to die in a fire in The Bahamas this year, Director of Fire Services Superintendent Walter Evans said. According to police, officers in Great Harbor Cay received information of the house fire in Southwest Royal Palm around 9 a.m. When police responded, the two-story wooden structure had already been destroyed by fire.

Officers conducted a search of the debris and discovered the man's body burnt beyond recognition. Police said they have an idea who the victim is but were awaiting official identification. A team of fire department investigators from New Providence was in Great Harbour Cay assisting with the investigations, police said. The fire happened a day after a husband and wife were injured in a fire at their Garden Hills home in New Providence.

Police said they were detained in hospital in stable condition. Shortly after 1 a.m. on Monday, police received information of the fire at Hyacinth Avenue. Firefighters responded and met the western section of a seven-room, single-story, stone structure engulfed in flames. Police said the fire was brought under control within a short period and subsequently extinguished.

At hospital, the wife was treated for smoke inhalation and the husband for injuries to his face and hands, police reported. In other news, police were investigating the discovery of a bone found on a property off Carmichael Road. Police said that around 3:24 p.m. on Monday they were notified that a bone, believed to be that of a human being, was found on the property at Mermaid Boulevard west. The bone was collected and will be examined, police said.
