Lack of local ownership of hotels

Dear Editor,

The ongoing debate concerning the Baha Mar project on Cable Beach has caused me to reflect on the state of our tourist industry in general and Bahamian ownership of it in particular.
I am concerned that although tourism has been our number one industry for years, the Bahamian ownership component is still negligible.
We have lauded ourselves as being number one in the Caribbean and leaders of the industry in the region, but we, as Bahamians, have not managed to produce a viable product such as a Sandals or a Breezes which are owned and operated by Jamaican nationals.
