Taking jazz from the street to the waterfront

Fri, May 25th 2012, 11:33 AM

The jazz was so hot, that it created an inferno in Frederick Street. This year, the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise, expect the heat to be just as intense so they're taking their event to the waterfront.
Jazz by The Water will be held on Friday, May 11 at Blu Restaurant Bar and Lounge, located at the Elizabeth on Bay Plaza. The event will feature five bands whose unique styles will captivate the audience. Sapphire Jazz Ensemble is expected to showcase a more youthful jazz approach. High Tide Band is expected to bring a sultry, high energy jazz approach with high energy; Gawain on Sax and the Crew will bring the fire again this year. The four-piece ensemble made such a great impression on the crowd last year with their Junkanoo fusion style of jazz, that organizers said they had to bring them back for an encore. Veteran jazz group, Jazz Etcetera are expected to bring a more mature and smooth style reminiscent of classical jazz with a pop of their own flavor; and everyone's favorite Reggae fusion band, The Illest will also take a turn at this jazzy event.
The first note sounds off at 6:30 p.m., with the last note closing out the Mississippi River inspired event at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.
"Jazz in the Street was a really big hit and people kept asking for more. This is why we decided to do it again. People just wanted to do something after hours downtown, so we thought it would be great to try it again," said Emerika Robinson, the club's fundraising director. "And we definitely brought something newer and interesting this time around."
As jazz lovers take in their fill of the music, they can also have their appetites sated throughout the evening with a menu that will have something for everyone, from the meat lover, to the seafood fans and the vegetarians. Conch fritters, crab cakes, spring rolls, sliders with lamb, beef and chicken and martini shrimp shooters will be on the menu.
"What will make this event even more interesting is the venue and how beautiful and tranquil everything will be," said Robinson. "Imagine coming onto Bay Street with the sun nearly setting and the boats cruising by in the harbor and a wonderful, mellow sound of jazz music permeating the air. This evening will be just captivating. You will not want to miss it."
Funds raised from the jazz event will go toward the club's many charities and community projects like the Crisis Center and Royal Bahamas Police Force Gang Violence Program.
