GRAND BAHAMA, The Bahamas -- The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) recently announced plans to expand the national park system on Grand Bahama. One of the areas under consideration as part of this expansion initiative is Sweeting's Cay.
In early April a team from the BNT led by Lakeshia Anderson, BNT Parks Planner, met with Local Government Officials on Sweeting's Cay to engage in discussions on incorporating areas of high biodiversity on Sweeting's Cay in BNT's National Park system. The BNT team was invited by Mr. Bradley Armbrister, District Administrator for East Grand Bahama.
While on Sweeting's Cay, the BNT team had the opportunity to formally meet with East Grand Bahama Administrator and Local Township Committee Members to gain insight and understanding of the community's opinions about protecting the area. The BNT team also shared the process on how new national parks are devised, and the factors that are considered when plans are designated for individual areas of protection.
Mr. Calvin Tate, Deputy Chairman for Sweeting's Cay, took the BNT team on a tour of the community and several sites that the local officials thought may be of interest. Part of the tour involved local residents assisting with guiding the officials and the BNT team through areas of thick bush and trails that led to ponds containing several blue holes.
