One local catering company is cashing in delivering healthy lunches to homes and offices. Tyrina Neely, owner of Brown Bag Gourmet, told Guardian Business that her company is designed to bring creative and nutritious lunch options to Bahamians.

Since launching Brown Bag around one year ago, Neely noted that her business is showing great promise. "I started off with just me, delivering lunch for just two days out of the week," she said. "I have been able to establish a contract with young chefs on the island to do all of the catering. With every new business, it starts off slow. We are started off with word of mouth, by the second day of Brown Bag, the orders had doubled."

Neely further revealed that it was her first business, Primadona, led her to open the Brown Bag Gourmet Catering Company. "I love to cook and people would always ask me who did the catering and I would tell customers that I did it. At my Primadona events, I started making the appetizers. After a few events, people started asking me and it led me to start catering. I wanted to explore something different and that's how Brown Bag got started," she explained. The company delivers meals that consist of a main course and dessert to either your home or office. "You don't have to sacrifice great taste for nutritious meals," Trevor Miller, head chef noted.

"My aim is to consistently deliver creative and delicious lunch menus that are also good for you." Brown Bag offers lunch deliveries every Wednesday with two menu options to choose from. Both options, Neely added, contain a protein, carbohydrate and vegetable component. The "lighter fare" option, typically a signature salad, offers customers the added value of corresponding nutritional facts - ideal for persons wishing to monitor their caloric, sodium and sugar intake. "Many professionals get so caught up in the workday and neglect to eat a balanced meal which is so vital to providing them with the energy needed to stay focused the entire day. Brown Bag solves that problem." Neely said.

Orders must be placed at least one day in advance via telephone or email. Menus can be viewed on the company's website brownbagbahamas.com or facebook.com/brownbaggourmet. Brown Bag has three full-time employees including Neely, Miller and a delivery driver. The company has serviced many major organizations since its launch. The company makes use of locally grown produce, items made in The Bahamas and organic products whenever possible.
