HAMILTON, Bermuda - After Easter Sunday morning in Hamilton, Bermuda, Keianna Albury must have been wondering what she needed to do to win an individual medal at the 41st CARIFTA Track and Field Championships.
Competing in her second event, the Eleuthera native turned in another fourth place performance to fall just outside of the medal picture. On Sunday, she was fourth in the under-17 girls shot put with a distance of 12.40 meters (m) - 40' 8-1/4". In that same event, her teammate Brashae Wood finished fifth, with a best throw of 12.17m (39' 11-1/4").
"It's disappointing but it just motivates me to come out even stronger next time. I'm definitely looking for the gold next time," said Albury who was competing in her first CARIFTA Championships this weekend. "I felt like I did good. It's definitely a learning experience for me. Now, I know what I need to work on," she added.
Teammate Wood wasn't too far behind as she finished fifth with her best throw of 12.17m.
"I felt like I could have done a little better but under the conditions, I gave it my best effort so I'm satisfied," said Wood on Sunday. "It was very cold out there but I hung in and gave it my best. I think that the whole team is doing well right now and hopefully we can continue it."
Trinidadian Chelsea James won the gold medal in that event with a best throw of 14.02m (46'), Trevia Gumbs, of the British Virgin Islands, was second with a best throw of 13.47m (44' 2-1/4"), and Protious Warren from Trinidad & Tobago won the bronze medal with a best toss of 13m flat (42' 7-3/4").
Positioning at the CARIFTA Track and Field Championships is determined based on number of gold medals won, and The Bahamas was able to win 14 gold medals to finish second behind Jamaica.
