College of The Bahamas biochemistry major Mikell Butler was recently presented with a $1,000 check by Woodside Insurance Brokerage Ltd. for her outstanding achievements in the 2011 Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examinations.

The 18-year-old graduate of C.V. Bethel Senior High School sat and passed nine subjects, receiving seven As and two Bs.  She received A grades in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, combined sciences, English language and history.  She received B grades in literature and Spanish.

Tanya Woodside, insurance broker and principal at Woodside Insurance Brokerage Ltd., congratulated Mikell on her outstanding exam results, and encouraged her to remain focused as she moves into this new chapter of her life.

"The demands of The College of The Bahamas, and then studying overseas, will be greater than what you have experienced in high school, and so I encourage you to apply the same discipline and focus that earned you this success, so that you will continue to make yourself, your family and your community proud," said Woodside.

Mikell ended her first semester at COB with a 3.52 grade point average, and has plans to continue her studies in the medical program at the University of the West Indies, beginning September 2012.  Upon graduation from medical school she wants to specialize in oncology, and then become part of the team of scientists who find a cure for cancer.

She said her interest in the sciences peaked while she was a student at C.V. Bethel, where she was part of the school's science magnet program. Member of Parliament for the Pinewood constituency Byran Woodside congratulated Mikell and hailed her as "the best of Pinewood".  He told her she is proof of what is possible for an individual with discipline and focus.

"Mikell will no doubt inspire other young people - especially young people in Pinewood - to achieve this same level of success." Mikell thanked Woodside Insurance Brokerage for the donation and said she would use the funds to purchase books.
