Who's Watching Montagu Beach

Thu, Jan 5th 2012, 07:52 AM

Dear Editor,

Are the authorities aware that jet ski operators are using the nice new beach at the Montagu Park to launch their personal craft instead of the boat ramp?

Are there plans to prevent their trailers from traversing the beach?

People have also been observed chopping out and cleaning conch, and tossing the shells into the water at the new beach next to the old dock.  These shells are sharp, and conch shell wounds can be extremely painful and toxic.

The public is already leaving litter on the new beach. Is there a plan to manage and police this public area?  To (dare we even hope) enforce litter laws? Properly trained police/beach wardens should be stationed at the park.

Given the nasty and unruly habits of too many, it would be naive to assume that the problems will simply dissipate with the upgrade. It is truly embarrassing to hear what tourists say when they visit the area.
