Izaak Bastian, 10, was the golden boy for The Bahamas, winning a gold medal in both of the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke at the recent Speedo Plantation Winter Championship in Plantation, Florida.  Bastian was one of 20 swimmers from the Barracuda Swim Club, who attended the Florida swim meet along with Head Coach Sue Coleby and recently appointed Senior Coach Travano McPhee.

The 10-and-under boys team of Christopher Neil, Bastian, Samuel Gibson and Devante Carey won the bronze medal in the 200-yard medley relay. Other finalists included: Drew Bastian, 13, who came in fourth in the 50-yard breastroke, fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard individual medley (IM) and 10th in the 50-yard free; Meshach Roberts who came ninth in the 200-yard backstroke; Samuel Gibson, 10, who came fifth in the 50-yard fly and ninth in the 100-yard fly; Amber Pinder, 10, came eighth in the 50-yard backstroke and Devante Carey, the sole nine year old athlete, who came seventh in the 50 fly and 10th in the 100 breaststroke.

The Barracuda Swim Club participates in this meet annually as a preparation for swimmers seeking to make the national team for regional championships later in the swim season. The club looks forward to the re-opening, after many months, of the Betty Kelly Kenning National Swim Complex, to assist in the necessary training for potential national swimmers.
