Walton tops list of BSW entrants

Bahamas Speed Week (BSW) is an event filled with impressive numbers.
There are more than $100 million worth of vintage vehicles taking part. It's expected to draw thousands of tourists to New Providence. And  spots in the Paddock Club, a  private area for leading businesses, is selling at a minimum of $10,000 a pop.
But perhaps the most telling number for BSW is simply the presence of one man - Samuel Robson "Rob" Walton.
In the list of the 41 elite entrants released at a press conference for BSW yesterday, it was publically revealed that the chairman of the world's largest retail company will be travelling to Nassau next week.
With an estimated net worth of $21 billion, the presence of one of the world's wealthiest and most influential entrepreneurs serves as the cherry on the cake for an event sure to provide a powerful injection of tourism dollars and business networking.
"There are quite a number of wealthy and influential people coming," said David McLaughlin, one of BSW's chief organizers.
"It gives credibility ot the event and The Bahamas that people want to come here. But lets not forget that Walton is also a car guy. He has a huge collection of wonderful cars, including one that was originally raced in Nassau in 1958. So it's a real Nassau car - a Maserati 450S. He has a very large collection and chose to bring an original Nassau car. He could have brought anything from his stable, so he is being very supportive."
The press conference yesterday served as the official kickoff of BSW fever.
Attended by Charles Maynard, the minister of youth, sports and culture, and Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, the minister of tourism and aviation, the government threw their weight behind an event that is expected to restore a tradition that will fuel the local economy.
Vanderpool-Wallace told the crowd that BSW has caught the imagination of enjoys full support across the government.

Maynard said on more than one occasion that this year's revival, decades in the making, will no doubt be the first of many to come.
Jimmie Lowe, the president of BSW, thanked all the various stakeholders for their support.
He was joined by at least 15 major sponsors of the event, all of which will take their place in the exclusive Paddock Club in the center of Arawak Cay, where participants will mix, mingle and talk cars and business.
"Every single sponsor was represented," mcLaughlin told Guardian Business.
"It was an excellent turnout. From a business perspective, I know raising sponsorship is very hard in this climate. And to raise the sponsors and awareness that we have is remarkable."
Schooner Bay and the Out Island Promotion Board are among some of the latest local sponsors to step up to the track.
They join a long list of other companies, some of which are an international presence as well, including Red Bull, Shell, Graycliff, Carlo Milano, Grand Bahama Port Authority and Callenders and Co.
" I think there is an awareness that we will get a lot of high income earners both off island and on island," McLaughlin pointed out.
With the introduction of foreign businessmen such as Walton, the result is a major boost for local commerce and untold potential for future investment.
McLaughlin told Guardian Business that the event is "right where it should be". The tent is up, the fencing around the track is in place, the bleachers are installed and the fish fry area around Arawak Cay, which houses the temporarily track, is "unrecognizable being cleaned up and polished".
He sees BSW as not a single event in itself to spark tourism and investment, but also a continuation of all the exciting things happening in The Bahamas.
"I have seen amazing strides with the airport terminal and Arawak Cay looks fantastic," he explained. "If we had tried to do this two or three years ago, it would not only have been harder, but also less relevant. We need to sell ourselves to the outside world. There is so much happening - and BSW can be a vehicle for that."
BSW runs from Nov 30 until Dec 4. Tickets can be purchased through the event's website at www.bahamasspeedweekrevival.com.
