Big Apple Academy Goes Pink For The Cure

The students at Big Apple Academy may have looked at it simply as another day to attend school out of uniform, but "Pink Day" at Big Apple Academy's pre-school was symbolic in the fight for a breast cancer cure.

"We did it because we wanted to show support to the mothers of our students, and because the school consists of 13 female employees who in some way must be aware and concerned about breast cancer," said Glennis Morley, principal at the school located on Hamster Road off Faith Avenue.

"We used the day to bring awareness to those who may be, or who may know someone who is or was diagnosed with the disease, and how they can support each other, as well as how organizations can assist women affected with the disease mentally, socially and financially.  We wanted the women to know that breast cancer can affect any woman, and to show that if it happened to one of our parents, we would be there to support them."

Children aged 6 months to four years of age paid $2 each to wear pink, which raised a total of $240, which was donated to the Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group.  The school took the pink theme a little further, doling out pink strawberry lemonade and pink strawberry ice cream.  A Christmas tree at the school was also decorated pink to symbolize hope.  Before the start of the day, the school's staff took to the Milo Butler Highway where they passed out information on breast cancer.
