Most calls to BASRA from boaters 'stranded with broken engines'

FREEPORT - Emergency rescue officials say many boating mishaps could be avoided if boaters took the time to follow proper safety procedures before venturing out to sea.

Tom Christian, director of search and rescue at the Bahamas Air/Sea Rescue Association (BASRA), said that the majority of calls they receive are from people stranded at sea because their engine broke down.

"We average 30 calls a month and we assist 20 to 30 people, possibly more," he said.
