As June 1 marks the beginning of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Grand Bahama Disaster Risk Consultative Committee held a press conference urging all residents of Grand Bahama to prepare for the season ahead.

Residents are encouraged to secure their homes, clear debris from their properties, secure important documents, stock up on necessary medications and medical supplies and ensure they have other essential emergency items readily available.

To date, 16 shelters across Grand Bahama have been inspected and approved for use during the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Residents are reminded that a mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for East Grand Bahama whenever such an order is issued during a threatening storm event. The designated shelter for residents of East Grand Bahama remains at Maurice Moore Primary School.

The Incident Command Center (ICC) for Grand Bahama is located at the Collab Unit in the Harold DeGregory Government Complex from which emergency response efforts will be managed during any hurricane related event.

For official updates, preparedness information, and emergency announcements throughout the hurricane season, residents are encouraged to follow the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Authority, the Bahamas Department of Meteorology, and the Public Hospitals Authority on their official social media platforms.
