Local Sorority Members Celebrate Earth Day with Community Service Initiative in Fox Hill

With hands and shovels working the soil and a shared commitment to community, young leaders from across New Providence marked Earth Day with a meaningful environmental service project on April 25, 2026 at the Fox Hill Community Center. The service project t was organized by members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Island Jewels of New Providence Interest Group. The group conducts the sorority’s Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) which is a youth-led leadership development program that provides educational services, programs, and workshops for students ages 11-13. The program's areas focus inckude culture, careers, STEM and the environment.

This marks the second years for the program in New Providence. Last year, students planted flowering plants and beautified the area surrounding the “big tree” at the Fox Hill Community Center. This year’s cohort deepen their environmental stewardship efforts. Students cleared and cleaned the front grounds of the community center and planted herbs and vegetables in individual containers, which they will nurture and monitor at home as part of their ongoing learning experience.

A total of 20 students from various schools participated in this year's Earth Day project, including L.W. Young Junior High School, St. Andrew’s International School, and Akhepran International Academy. They demonstrated teamwork, responsibility, and a shared sense of purpose. Sorority leaders applauded the students for their hardwork.

“This project is a shining example of what happens when young people are empowered with purpose and guided by service," said Dr. Janet Davis-Dorsett, President of the Island Jewels of New Providence. "Our Youth Leadership Institute participants are not only learning the importance of environmental responsibility but are actively contributing to the beautification and sustainability of their community." Davis-Dorsett added. She said the group is deeply committed to fostering youth leadership and making a lasting impact in Eastern New Providence.

The impact of the initiative was also recognized by Dr. Jacinta Higgs, Founder and Principal of Akhepran International Academy, who thanked the group for giving their students the opportunity to participate. "It truly meant a great deal to us as it will be added to their transcript and digital portfolio." Dr. Higgs shared. "My heart is especially grateful knowing that our students showed up, engaged, and were able to contribute meaningfully. Experiences like these are invaluable in shaping their sense of responsibility, service, and connection to community."

Through initiatives like this Earth Day project, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Youth Leadership Institute is cultivating the next generation of leaders by instilling the values of service, awareness, and life skills.
