The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources officially launched Agri-Business Expo 2026 during an opening ceremony held on Friday, April 10, at the Farmer's Market site on Gladstone Road.

Held under the theme, ‘Agriculture our Heritage – Our Future,’ the event brought together key national leaders, stakeholders, educators, and members of the public to celebrate and promote the growth and modernization of agriculture in The Bahamas.

In attendance were Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis; Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, the Hon. Jomo Campbell; former Governor General, Dame Marguerite Pindling; along with senior government officials.

The ceremony featured vibrant cultural performances by R. M. Bailey Senior High School Pop Band and students of Garvin Tynes Primary School, setting an energetic tone for the event.   Mistress of ceremonies Jacqueline Fox-Deveaux guided proceedings.

Brief remarks were delivered by Permanent Secretary Neil Campbell; General Manager of the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC), Troy Sampson; and Senior Education Officer Patrice Green, all of whom emphasized the importance of agriculture to national development and food security.

Minister Jomo Campbell, in his remarks and introduction of the Prime Minister, highlighted the historical and future significance of the sector. He presented a 1964 report produced by his grandfather, who served as an Administrator in Old Bight, Cat Island, outlining the potential of agriculture in The Bahamas.  Drawing on this legacy, Minister Campbell encouraged young people to view agriculture through a modern lens, noting that the industry has evolved significantly and now offers vast opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

Prime Minister Davis, in delivering the keynote address and officially opening the Expo, reaffirmed the Government’s strong commitment to expanding the agricultural sector. He noted that the administration has been aggressively advancing a range of initiatives aimed at strengthening food security and increasing domestic production. These efforts include targeted subsidies, expanded opportunities for Bahamians to access agricultural land, and supportive legislative measures designed to stimulate growth in the industry.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of agricultural grants to 30 schools across the country. Each institution received $2,500 to support the development and enhancement of agricultural programs, underscoring the Government’s focus on youth engagement and long-term sustainability in the sector.

Agri-Business Expo 2026 serves as a platform to showcase local talent, innovation, and investment opportunities, while fostering greater collaboration among farmers, agribusiness professionals, educators, and policymakers.
