Prime Minister Philip Davis has confirmed that Bahamians will head to the polls on May 12, marking the next national general election.
In a statement issued today, Davis outlined the constitutional timeline that will guide the upcoming electoral process. He said he will advise the governor general to dissolve Parliament on Wednesday, April 8, in accordance with Article 66(2) of the Constitution. The Writs of Election are scheduled to be issued the following day, Thursday, April 9, 2026, as required under Article 67(1).
This sets the stage for the countrywide vote on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Davis also reminded voters that anyone holding a valid purple voter’s card remains properly registered and does not need to sign up again. “If you are on the current register of voters, you are entitled to vote,” he noted.
However, he encouraged individuals who are registering for the first time, those who have relocated and need to transfer their registration, or anyone wishing to verify their details to act promptly. Under the Parliamentary Elections Act, the voter register closes at the end of Wednesday, April 8, 2026. With the Writs being issued on April 9, no new registrations or transfers can be processed after that cutoff.
