Parliament Prorogued as Governor General Issues Formal Proclamation

Parliament was officially prorogued on Friday following a directive from Governor General Dame Cynthia Pratt, acting on the constitutional advice of Prime Minister Philip Davis. The announcement marked the formal close of the current parliamentary session, resetting all unfinished legislative business.

Shortly after noon, Commissioner of Police Shanta Knowles appeared on the steps of the House of Assembly to read the proclamation to gathered officials and onlookers. The brief ceremony signaled the immediate suspension of parliamentary proceedings and the clearing of the House’s legislative agenda, a standard consequence of prorogation.

By tradition, all bills, motions, and committee work that have not been finalized come to an end unless reintroduced when Parliament reconvenes. The move often precedes the start of a new legislative session, which typically opens with a Speech from the Throne outlining the government’s priorities for the year ahead.

Commissioner Knowles confirmed that the next sitting of the House of Assembly is scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, at 10 a.m., when members are expected to return under a renewed session.
