Government’s Family Islands Airport Renaissance Continues with the Opening of Mayaguana Airport

In keeping with goals outlined in its Blueprint for Change, another Family Island airport has been completed and is ready for operation.

The Mayaguana Airport Commissioning Ceremony was held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation.

The event drew residents led by Local Government officials, and guests from New Providence.

“This airport, this new terminal standing before us, is a declaration of the importance of Mayaguana to our plans for development,” said the Hon. Philip Davis, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, in his Keynote Address.

“It is a declaration that every Bahamian, regardless of which island they call home, deserves world-class infrastructure and a government that keeps its word and delivers,” he said. “In September 2021, we made a commitment to launch the most ambitious Family Islands Airport Renaissance in the history of this country.  Today, we deliver on that promise, here, in Abraham’s Bay.”

Mayaguana is the easternmost and one of the most secluded islands in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, situated approximately 334 miles southeast of Nassau. It is considered the halfway point between South Florida and Puerto Rico, and is about 520 miles off Palm Beach, Florida.

With no more than 400 inhabitants, the island is known for its untapped pristine beaches and perfect underwater world, wildlife and bone fishing escapades.  It is also a popular stopover for boaters en-route to the eastern Caribbean.

This new terminal has been fitted with a comfortable ticketing area, restrooms, dedicated airline offices, vendor spaces, and full operational capacity for airport security and police.

Construction was completed in December 2025. And it received full power in January with its own dedicated transformer.

The airport was first constructed in the late 1950s and opened in 1960.  Before then, Mayaguana was accessible only by boat.

The new building is just less than 3,200 square feet, and can accommodate inside and outside seating, and opportunities for vendors. Additionally, a new world-class ambulance will be stationed at the terminal donated by a private partner, to facilitate air evacuations.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation the Hon. Chester Cooper also gave remarks, underscoring the importance of the moment.

“In our Blueprint for Change, we made a commitment to invest in the foundations that make progress possible. That is why we launched an aggressive Family Islands Airports Renaissance – an initiative now spanning 14 airports and expanding to even more areas across The Bahamas,” he said.

He observed that Mayaguana is well positioned geographically and the new infrastructure can be a significant logistics and transshipment hub for the southern Bahamas as is Grand Bahama for the north.

“I envision a strategic hub between Europe – Africa – the Bahamas and the Caribbean.  It is designed to support the additional development that is coming,” he said.

Since 2021, major works have been completed at Ragged Island, Great Harbour Cay, and Grand Bahama’s domestic terminal, LPIA, Long Island’s Stella Maris, and now, Mayaguana.

Active construction is underway at more than 10 sites in Abaco, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama International, and elsewhere.

The government is in the planning phase for additional airports in Abaco, Andros, Crooked Island, Exuma, and Rum Cay.

“And Mayaguana is primed to receive even more investment. We have already committed to building a three-phased deep-water seaport on this island, facilitated through a public-private partnership with Mayaguana Island Developers and Global Lead Consultant Group Limited that will include a cruise ship terminal, a deep-water transshipment port, and adjacent land development,” the prime minister said.

He explained that this project, which will be jointly owned by the Government, the Mayaguana Island Development Fund, and private partners, is projected to create 2,000 jobs over its lifetime on the island.

“The economy of Mayaguana will be forever changed by this progress, and this is just the beginning of our plans,” he said.

The Government thanked tourism staff, technical teams and partners involved in the airport project.
