The Ministry for Grand Bahama officials recently organized and hosted the fourth annual Pineridge Health Fair at the Urban Renewal Centre (November 22).  Residents from communities across the island turned out in strong numbers.

The Ministry for Grand Bahama’s Collab Unit partnered with Doctors Hospital, the Urban Renewal Authority and Grand Bahama Health Services to offer a full range of free and accessible health services to residents from East to West Grand Bahama.

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey, said she was encouraged by the turnout.

“It’s a wonderful turnout and it shows that people recognize that health is wealth. We’ve been promoting that throughout the Pine Ridge community and the constituency,” she said.

“We have individuals from East End to West End who have come to take advantage of these services. I’m excited about all that I see here and we must continue these types of collaborations that truly impact the lives of our people. Great job to the Public Hospitals Authority, Doctors Hospital and the Ministry for Grand Bahama’s Collab Unit.”

Deputy Director for Urban Renewal Senator Kirkland Russell emphasized that the partnership reflects the true mission of Urban Renewal and thanked the Minister for Grand Bahama for continuing the initiative.

The fair offered residents a variety of free medical services, including flu shots, ophthalmology screenings, blood pressure and glucose checks and blood donations through the on-site blood bank.

Dr. Stacy Bevans-Laing reported that more than 100 people registered for this year’s health fair. While pleased with the turnout, she emphasized the ongoing importance of public health initiatives.

“These ventures are very important because we have persons who are simply not self-aware,” she said. “If you’re not aware of what’s going on in your body, you won’t take care of it until it’s too late. These health fairs are essential.”

Dr. Dennis Deveaux, Chief Financial Officer of Doctors Hospital Health System Limited, noted that eye screenings were also part of Saturday’s offerings.

“We want to make these kinds of services widely available, and the key is that we’re not doing this alone,” he said. “We’re doing this in partnership with the Government of the Bahamas, through the Office of the Prime Minister, where the Hon. Ginger Moxey has shown tremendous leadership and importantly with the Grand Bahama Health Services under the Public Hospitals Authority. We’re very pleased with the collaboration.”
